From 2008 to 2020, VILLUM FONDEN and VELUX FONDEN have allocated grants of more than DKK 1.6 billion to projects that focus on the environment and sustainability. Thematically, the foundations’ grants are distributed evenly on biodiversity and climate. Some of the biggest initiatives are gathered here.

Danish marine environment

Since 2015, VELUX FONDEN has had a special focus on the Danish marine environment and grants approximately DKK 50 million annually to initiatives that work to protect a healthy sea. Read more about the Environment grant area.

The support for biodiversity projects ranges from Danish nature protection with the establishment of the Danish Nature Fund to an initiative aimed at standardising nanomaterials in the EU.

The grants for climate initiatives include the establishment of the independent climate protection foundation KR Foundation and projects aimed at promoting responsible investments and transparency in companies’ resource footprint.

In addition to the ‘green grants’, many of the foundations’ large research grants focus on climate issues:

  • More than 25% of VILLUM FONDEN’s active grants (DKK 700 million) go to research in technical and natural sciences that provides insight into climate change and the basis for solutions.
  • VELUX FONDEN’s climate research grants focus on the crucial role of the human factor in the green transition. Since 2016, the foundation has allocated grants of more than DKK 20 million to specific interdisciplinary projects where human and social science researchers collaborate with local authorities, NGOs and citizens to create models for green communities and more climate-friendly behaviour.

International environmental projects

In 2014, VILLUM FONDEN founded the environmental protection foundation KR Foundation and grants DKK 100 million each year to KR Foundation’s grant allocations over a ten-year period. KR Foundation supports international environmental projects – including think tanks and grassroots organisations – that rethink and innovate themes in all environmental protection areas ranging from sustainable investments to consumer behaviour and climate communication.

Danish nature protection

Together with the Danish State and Aage V. Jensen Naturfond, VILLUM FONDEN founded the Danish Nature Fund in 2015. VILLUM FONDEN has granted DKK 250 million to the Nature Fund, which works to preserve and improve Danish nature, enable great nature experiences and strengthen popular support for the work with nature restoration and protection.

The Danish Nature Fund is a private commercial foundation, which, according to the Danish Nature Fund Act (Lov om Den Danske Naturfond), is subject to a number of requirements aimed at ensuring open and good management and giving the general public access to natural areas.

Green thinking and communication

Since 2010, VELUX FONDEN and VILLUM FONDEN have granted more than DKK 50 million to the green think tank CONCITO.

VILLUM FONDEN has granted the UN Foundation DKK 51 million to support global communication in connection with the publication of IPCC’s 5th Assessment Report.

Green impact investments

Since 2013, the foundations have placed an increasing proportion of their assets in green impact investments aimed at both combating climate change and yielding returns. The share of these investments currently constitutes 10% of tied-up foundation assets (i.e. DKK 2 billion) – with the target being to increase the share to 15% by 2023.
