The Villum Kann Rasmussen Annual Award in Science and Technology was instituted in 1987, but only in 2012 was it decided that the Annual Award should be accompanied by a medal. And the most natural choice to make was a medal with the likeness of the founder Villum Kann Rasmussen.
Purveyor to Her Majesty, Jeweller A. Dragsted was given the task to design and shape the medal. An expert examined and photographed the bronze plate of Villum Kann Rasmussen’s profile, today hanging on the wall in the domicile of THE VELUX FOUNDATIONS, Tobaksvejen 10, Søborg.
The bronze plate was minted into a steel stamp in order to stamp the medal in the old-fashioned manner. As it is a 4.3 mm thick medal, it is necessary to stamp and calcine it several times to show the relief in the desired quality.
The medal is 70 mm in diameter and weighs 129.8 g. It is manufactured in bronze brass and presented in a handmade medium blue fabric casing, the top showing VILLUM FONDEN’s name and logo in gold print.
The obverse of the medal shows Villum Kann Rasmussen’s profile. The reverse of the medal shows VILLUM FONDEN’s logo, the name of VILLUM FONDEN is printed below at the edge, and on the rim around the medal “Villum Kann Rasmussen’s Annual Award in Science and Technology” is printed. The middle of the medal leaves space for engraving the name of the recipient of the Annual Award including year.
