Organic farming as a motivating force for local development
The long-term goals of the project
The overall objective of the project is to show new ways of how we Danes use land resources in the best way possible while we revitalize rural areas and protect nature. Throughout the project, the goal is to inspire other parts of the country to implement similar development projects.
Produktionshøjskolen Marienlyst in Skive has in collaboration with a number of participants received a grant of 4.8 million DKK from VILLUM FONDEN and VELUX FONDEN for a 5-year development project in Østsalling.
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the potential for sustainable small organic farms in order to attract new farmers to the area, so that there can be a cluster of up to 20 small farms in Østsalling.
By developing a local cluster of new agriculture, it is expected that there will be created a dynamic of organic farming and settlements in the local area that will provide a positive impact on nature and the people living there.
Østsalling is selected as the development area because it is close to the organic Thise dairy, and because the area holds both demographic and natural qualities that make it attractive for farmers.
Produktionshøjskolen Marienlyst has been actively involved in the education of young people for more than 27 years. They have workshops that include organic farming as well as a café and a kitchen. Produktionshøjskolen have chosen to be actively engaged in the project to strengthen the development of local jobs within ecology and food.
The project's first phase is a documentation of the economics of small organic farms with concrete starting point in existing dairy farming in the size of 40-50 hectares.
Based on the documented economics 1-2 demonstrational farms is to be acquired with the purpose of establishing a daily operation, which can be an example for future establishments of new farms in the area.
In order to keep costs down for the new farmers a foundation will be established, that will invest in land.
During the course of the project, new farmers will establish themselves locally and become part of the settlement cluster, where there will be a strong technical, industrial and social community.
