More natural science in upper secondary schools

The Danish journal Aktuel Naturvidenskab (Current Science) has received DKK 1,4 million from VILLUM FONDEN for a project, which will strengthen the direct the contact between the country's upper secondary school students and natural science research environments at Danish universities.

Aktuel Naturvidenskab has facilitated Danish research to a broad range of readers since 1999 and from the outset the journal, with its unique concept, has been a treasured resource for especially upper secondary school teachers and pupils.

Now, this resource gets even stronger.

Aktuel Naturvidenskab has received DKK 1,4 million from VILLUM FONDEN for a three-year educational project to increase upper secondary school students' benefit from the magazine's academic content - whilst stimulating their interest in natural science and engineering.

In brief, Aktuel Naturvidenskab will in close collaboration with upper secondary school teachers develop digital teaching resources related to the articles. A digital platform, an app, will also be developed to present the digital material in a timely manner suitable for modern education.

In addition, the grant will also mean, that the printed version of Aktuel Naturvidenskab will be distributed on a large scale to upper secondary schools in the projects period.

The unique concept of Aktuel Naturvidenskab is that the magazine is published in a nationwide collaboration between universities, and that the vast majority of the articles are written by researchers working on the projects described in the articles - but on a linguistic and professional level understandable for an upper secondary school student.

With an edition of 8,000 copies six times a year, Aktuel Naturvidenskab is a flagship for Danish research in natural science and technology - among the subscribers are research environments, private companies, private citizens and not least upper secondary school teachers.

Through a few pilot projects, Aktuel Naturvidenskab has produced extra material directed at the pupils for a range of articles in the magazine, and have for a number of years given 12 upper secondary schools in Northern Jutland the magazine for free. The projects have proved beneficial for all parties

"Our surveys further indicate that upper secondary schools represent most of the approximately 45,000 annual downloads of articles from our article archive. The most popular articles in the archive are typically those about the core substance in the upper secondary school teaching, significantly peaking around the exams," says Carsten Rabæk Kjaer, who along with George Dahlgaard constitute the editor team of Aktuel Naturvidenskab. They are both scientists with many years of experience in helping and "educating" pupils in the difficult art of dissemination of knowledge.
